01 / Biography
Banksy is a British artist whose stencil-based images bring dark humor and political commentary into public space. Working under a pseudonym, the artist uses familiar figures and unexpected juxtapositions to question authority, consumer culture, and the boundaries between art and everyday life. Street signs, walls, and architectural details often become active elements in the work.
The practice extends beyond street interventions to paintings, editioned prints, film, and large-scale projects. The Academy Award-nominated documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) and the temporary exhibition Dismaland (2015) brought this critical, deliberately disruptive approach to wider audiences. Across these forms, Banksy pairs instantly legible imagery with meanings that resist an easy resolution.
